SINKHOLE CLOSES FOUR BLOCKS OF E. MONUMENT STREET

Monument Street Closed Between Patterson Park Avenue and Milton Avenue

Baltimore (July 25, 2012) – A sinkhole was discovered on East Monument Street today at 1:30pm.  Due to additional equipment being brought on the scene to address the sinkhole and the gas leak,  East Monument Street is currently closed between Patterson Park Avenue and Milton Avenue.

The sinkhole is believed to be an opening into a 120-inch storm drain culvert, which records indicate was installed in 1930. There are early indications of a small gas leak as a result of the sinkhole.  DPW, Baltimore City Fire and Police Departments, The Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management, and BGE are all on the scene.
